Look
A resin floor is a synthetic resin that flows out to an even, often slightly glossy surface. Microcement is trowelled by hand and has a natural, slightly cloudy pattern, matt or satin. If you want a sleek, uniform floor, choose resin. If you want character and a concrete look with depth, choose microcement.
Thickness and demolition
Microcement is two to five millimetres thick and goes straight over tiles, concrete and anhydrite. A resin floor is usually three to five millimetres but needs a completely level, bare substrate. Existing tiles often have to come out or be levelled first. In a renovation microcement is therefore faster and often cheaper.
Underfloor heating and walls
Both are suitable for underfloor heating. The big difference: microcement can also go on walls, stairs, shower walls, furniture and outdoors. A resin floor stays a floor. If you want floor and wall to continue in one colour, microcement is the only option.
Price and maintenance
The price per square metre is comparable. Both floors are cleaned with neutral soap and can be refreshed after years. A resin floor can yellow in strong sunlight and is prone to scratches, microcement can scratch from sand and needs a professionally applied top coat.
